Sanyasi Revolt (1763-1880) Causes :

1. Famine of 1770

2. Harsh Economic order of British


  • Originally peasants evicted from the land, Sanyasi from Eastern India raided Company's Factories, treasuries and fought against companies forces.

  • Equal Participation of Hindus and Muslims was seen in the revolt

  • Leaders like Chirag Ali, Majnu Shah, Debi Chaudhurani participated in the revolt.

  • Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's Novel Anandamath is based on this revolt.

  • The revolt was suppressed by Warren Hastings
